Press Release:
Press Release NEW ORLEANS, March 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CTIA Wireless 2005 -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) is deploying its fully integrated CDMA network and SoftSwitch for Honduran operator Comunitel. The new 800 Mhz network is scheduled for service in early Q2 2005. This award continues Motorola's momentum for its SoftSwitch, now contracted by operators in eight countries worldwide, with a current overall capacity to support more than 12 million subscribers. "Motorola's SoftSwitch offers carriers like Comunitel the ability to launch their network with leading edge technology that offers faster deployment, better efficiencies in capital and lower operational expenses than legacy switching solutions," said Jose Figueroa, corporate vice president and general manager for Motorola's Networks business in Latin America and the Caribbean. "The Motorola SoftSwitch also delivers the platform to migrate to Motorola's IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), which will enable the convergence of applications across multiple access environments, and lay the foundation for seamless mobility." "Comunitel is implementing Motorola's CDMA technology to take advantage of the upcoming market liberalization in Honduras, set for December 2005; allowing us to position Comunitel as a leader in the market with a strong competitive advantage," said Hector Ivan Nunez, president and CEO of Comunitel. The Motorola SoftSwitch for CDMA (MSS-C) is a highly scalable packet-based platform that serves 2G and 3G networks, providing TDM, ATM and IP technologies. It offers flexible networking configurations, facilitating network optimization by delivering a separation of control server and media gateway (disaggregate architecture), resulting in a simpler network solution that localizes traffic, reducing long distance and backhaul. The Motorola SoftSwitch can function as a Gateway Mobile Switching Center (G-MSC), Tandem MSC, Serving MSC and Gateway/Serving MSC providing full network functionality and flexibility in delivering network optimization. The open architecture of the MSS-C, built on the same platform as the portfolio of Motorola's core solutions including IP Multi-Media System (IMS) and Push-To-Talk over Cellular (PoC), provides versatility enabling operators to rapidly add new applications and services.
