Press Release:

New Pseudo-Wire Solution Provides First ISDN Tunnelling Across IP Networks

Press Release
News Article  February 2005

LIPHOOK, England, February 28/PRNewswire/ -- Patapsco Communications, the innovative telecoms engineering company, is launching PacketBand ISDN-4P, the first Pseudo-Wire1 product to offer clear-channel ISDN tunnelling, so allowing users to run switched and dynamic ISDN services over an IP/MPLS network.

Aimed at carriers, government, military, corporate users and other IP equipment vendors and system integrators, PacketBand ISDN offers unique opportunities to transport high value, high margin services over standard IP networks. It allows on-demand synchronous services to run over IP, whilst preserving the "B" channels and all the signalling and data performance characteristics required by ISDN.

PacketBand places individual calls across an IP network when needed, with the added ability to "break-out" into national or international ISDN networks, opening a multitude of applications and service opportunities. PacketBand ISDN-4P also supports non-switch T1/E1 TDM over IP Pseudo-Wires and opportunities for voice traffic which is sensitive to quality and/or delay.

According to the research report: Pseudowires and the Future of Transport and Access Technology (January 05) by Heavy Reading, Light Reading Inc's, paid research division, Pseudo-Wire technologies such as PacketBand ISDN, have been heralded as "the solution for convergence in future telecom networks, because it preserves profitable legacy services even as it enables the creation of a truly next-generation network".

Even though many users will migrate to NGN (Next Generation Network) services over the next decade the change will be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Research analysts, Ovum estimate that by 2008 worldwide businesses will still be using 15 million basic rate ISDN services, 2 million primary rate ISDN services and 56 million narrowband leased lines. Many will be serving legacy applications and terminal equipment.

PacketBand ISDN enables legacy applications to be retained and transported over an IP network, instead of over expensive ISDN switched circuits. Users can make substantial financial savings whilst maintaining their existing applications and carriers can benefit by offering their customers high margin services.

Systems Integrators too, will benefit from PacketBand ISDN. It will extend the range of IP sales opportunities beyond VoIP to include legacy ISDN applications and as a tool to migrate existing services on to a new IP network. In essence, Systems Integrators can now offer a complete IP solution for voice, video and data services.
