Press Release:
Atenit Selects UTStarcom's MovingMedia 6000 3G TD-CDMA Solution in Sweden
Press Release
News Article February 2005
ALAMEDA, Calif., Feb. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- UTStarcom, Inc., a global leader in IP-based, end-to-end networking solutions and services, today announced that Atenit, a leading Swedish network operator, has selected the company's MovingMedia(TM) 6000 solution to deploy wireless broadband service in twelve municipalities in the region of Kalmar, Sweden. Atenit will deploy the equipment over a period of six months with estimated full coverage in the Kalmar region by July 2005.
Based on the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System Time Division Duplexing (UMTS TDD) standard for third-generation (3G) mobile networks, UTStarcom's MovingMedia 6000 solution allows carriers to offer high-value mobile data services of up to 3Mbps per subscriber, using a range of low-cost licensed frequency bands.
"Providing ubiquitous broadband access to our service provider customers Tele2, Telenor and Bredbandsbolaget is the goal for Atenit," said Hakan Ortenholm, chief executive officer at Atenit. "While the growth of WiFi has been successful in the expansion of broadband access, it does not address future broadband mobility. As more and more people migrate from fixed-line to wireless communications, the need for personal wireless broadband becomes paramount. Whereas other wireless broadband technologies promise mobility in the future, UTStarcom's MovingMedia 6000 UMTS-TDD solution delivers it today in a standards-based method that leverages affordable spectrum to offer high-revenue services, enabling a fast return on investment."
UTStarcom's MovingMedia 6000 TD-CDMA solution enables ubiquitous, always-on broadband access via an efficient use of 2.5-2.7 GHz, 3.4-3.5 GHz, or available unpaired 3G spectrum. The solution is based on UMTS-TDD, a non-line-of-sight, multi-user detection technology that allows high-speed access to users within buildings and outdoors in both urban and rural areas. Mobile operators with UMTS TDD spectrum and Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) with access to licensed spectrum can both use the MovingMedia 6000 solution to offer portable and mobile broadband data service. The MovingMedia 6000 also provides them with a migration path to portable and mobile voice in the near future.
"Our MovingMedia 6000 product line is the first and only end-to-end UMTS TDD solution available on the market today," said Hong Lu, chief executive officer of UTStarcom, Inc. "The distinct advantage of our MovingMedia 6000 solution compared with other wireless broadband technologies like WiMax, is that it offers low-cost, standards-based broadband data solutions that are truly portable and available now."
