Smartphone shipments today are on the rise, with a 44% projected growth rate through 2008. Personal digital assistants (PDAs) shipments are on the decline. Cell phones have huge shipping volumes. Cell phone vendors have been using nameless proprietary operating systems, which were designed for basic telephony and simple user interfaces. Their capabilities have been stretched to the maximum and cannot support "Smartphone" functionalities. Cell phone vendors have sensed this huge opportunity and are leveraging new technologies to enhance their market share. "I am comfortable in saying that we expect the market for convergence devices like smartphones to double to 100 million units in 2006," Chief Executive Jorma Ollila told a Nokia conference in Spain. Smartphones, as voice-centric mobile devices and the driving force behind power electronics development, are an emerging and changing technology.

"The market for converged mobile devices, or smartphones, demonstrates strong growth potential as both enterprises and consumers continue to show interest in improved devices combining data and telephony capabilities," says David Linsalata, analyst in IDC's Mobile Devices program.

This Research Report (249 pages) will be updated for a full year, and buyers will receive full access to a secure website for quarterly updates, plus a CD-ROM and hard copy for their personal library.

Authored by Mohammed Ilyas and Syed Ahson, Smartphones analyzes this new technology in great detail, all while discussing relevant reference solutions, the role of middleware on related operating systems, and how cell phone vendors consequently confront this growing challenge. The authors provide a very detailed and cogent perspective on the world of Smartphones, mostly by examining its vast feature sets, its impact on other leading technologies and companies, and by supplying extensive case studies on how Smartphones enhance user productivity and encourage deployment of user applications.

What is the impact of Smartphones on the South Asian market? What relevant security solutions have been developed by Smartphone operating system vendors? What are the market share projections for Smartphones by leading research companies? With Smartphones in hand, you will not only be able to seek out the answers to such challenging questions, but you will also understand the global impact that Smartphones have caused, along with the technologies that have facilitated Smartphone adoption.
