Despite a long history of development and significant media attention, little hard data exists to help quantify market opportunities for VoIP service providers -- or the potential impact on incumbent service providers.

TeleGeography Research has set out to bring clarity and a data-driven perspective by surveying the providers and potential consumers of Voice-over-broadband services in the United States.  The purpose of this research will be to answer the questions that still confound many observers:

Market Size

How big is the U.S. consumer VoIP services market?

What are the market shares of major service providers?

How does regulation affect the economics of VoIP?

Competition

Who are the major competitors? How do they compare?

What threat does VoIP present to ILECs?

What opportunity exists for competitive service providers?

Pricing and Services

What prices and services are on offer now?

Which prices will attract new VoIP customers?

Which features affect decisions on using VoIP?

Forecast and Outlook

How big will the VoIP services market get?

What factors will affect competition?

U.S. VoIP Report Consumer Survey

Anecdotal evidence of consumers trading wireline phones for VoIP service is widespread. To gain insight into actual behavior and interest, TeleGeography conducted a survey 1,500 households in the United States. The survey seeks to answer a number of questions for traditional operators as well as VoIP providers:

  • How knowledgeable are American consumers about VoIP services and technology?
  • Do they consider VoIP service as a replacement for, or a supplement to their current wireline service?
  • How likely are American households to consider VoIP service at varying price points? What is the price elasticity of demand for VoIP service?
  • Do questions of reliability concern potential VoIP customers? Are they worried about potential problems reaching local 911 emergency operators?
