Report Synopsis
In this the most recent survey of Wi-Fi pricing in Asia, BroadGroup has surveyed 67 service providers in 15 countries.
Since the last survey in June 2004, average prices have countered trends elsewhere and revealed significant rises across the main time band categories.
The average price for 30-days usage has risen by more than 72% although this equates to approximately one-third of the same-category price in Europe. More operators now include a one-month offering. Australia which has the highest number of competitors - is the most expensive country in the one-month category. Japan, Singapore and New Zealand offered the most competitive rates for one-month pricing. Singapore features the second highest number of competitors.
1-hour and 24-hour pricing has also recorded an increase. Where previously Asian tariffs were the cheapest worldwide, the survey reveals this trend is reversing, although the region maintains a differential below prices for the same time bands in Europe. The re-balancing of tariffs may reflect too a change in tactics, and possibly the business models being used particularly in the highly competitive Singapore market.
Overall. Australia is the most expensive country in the region across a range of Wi-Fi service offerings. The survey also found that Australia offered a very wide band of tariff plans and timeband categories suggesting that service providers are still attempting to achieve uniqueness through the price. Although Australias laggard position in the adoption of monthly pricing plans is now being reversed, actual usage time during the monthly scheme remains restricted and no offers of unlimited usage are available.
The new report provides a narrative interpreting some of the key results of the survey, supported by tables and charts, and is combined with Excel spreadsheet tariff tables presented in a uniform style. It is an invaluable reference for hotspot operators, mobile operators and other players in the emerging wi-fi market across the region.
