Motorola Inc is one of the world's leading providers of wireless, broadband, and automotive communications technologies. Its product range includes: wireless handsets and networks; mission-critical information systems; broadband networks; embedded telematics systems; and, semiconductor products.
In December 2003, Motorola signalled its intention to become a more communications equipment-related company, when it filed a registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in connection with the proposed separation of its semiconductor operations into a publicly-traded company. In July 2004, its semiconductor subsidiary, Freescale Semiconductor, raised US$1,600 million through an initial public offering (IPO) of around 121.6 million shares of its Class A common stock. Post IPO, around 32.5% of the total outstanding common stock of Freescale was held by the general public and the remaining 67.5% was held by Motorola.
